2022 - Issue 14

Showcasing artists and works that caught my attention.

Image 1 = The Yoon Hyup (@ynhp) pop-dots were much more impactful in person than I’d anticipated, but the real gems are his small scale pencil on paper works, impossible to photo due to reflective frames. Go see them in person.

Light and Shadow’ at Stolen Space (@stolenspacegallery) until 22 May

Images 2-3 = I first thought these large abstracts by John Hoyland (1934 - 2011) were “exquisite corpse” due to the stripey separation of very distinct styles. The PR says they’re inspired by scenes and events he witnessed in Bali, but I saw hidden figures and symbols calling out to me.

Flames Like Rainbows’ at Hales (@HalesGallery) until 15 May

Be mindful of the ekg-like stickers as you climb the rickety wooden staircase (Image 4). They’re contact microphones relaying the vibrations of your steps to a speaker upstairs, where interesting abstract wall art and underwhelming conceptual floor sculptures (Image 5) fill out the space.

The audio experience is beautiful in it’s simplicity, yet impossible to experience alone. Bring a friend. Ideally one with a strong tolerance for non-traditional art in order to fully enjoy the variety by Jasper Marsalis (@thatboiakathatboi

A tear, sliver, and eyelet’ at Emalin (@emalinofficial) until 07 May

There’s some incredibly interesting stuff going on regarding process, craft and materiality in this group show. Is the art itself any good? Dunno. I was far too distracted trying to figure out how it was all made.

Phantasmata’ at Public Gallery (@public__gallery) until 30 Apr

Image 6 = Rafał Zajko (@rafal_zajko)

Images 7-8 = Li Hei Di (@plum_black_field) (painting), Ewan MacFarlane (@ewanmacfarlane_) (sculpture)

Images 9-10 = The first London exhibition of Titus Kaphar is like a mashup of Lubaina Himid, Kehinde Wiley and Kara Walker. The result is something entirely unique, but requires study of race in America to fully appreciate some of the symbolism.

New Alters: Reworking Devotion’ at Gagosian (@gagosian) until 15 May
