2022 - Issue 34

Showcasing artists and works that caught my attention.

Images 1-3 = The colourful collage from Nuno Gil (@nunogil_studio) and technical proficiency of Dene Leigh (@deneleigh) are satisfying visual treats, but it’s the porcelain strippers and gold diggers from Ioana Maria Sisea (@ioanasisea) that you’ll be talking about long after you leave the gallery. How you interpret them will derive from your bias about overt sexuality and superficial fame. Love ‘em or leave ’em, they’re the boldest art on display in this emerging artist group show.

Introducing…’ at Rosenfeld (@galleryrosenfeld) until 06 Oct

Images 4-5 = I love the neon palette Nadia Wahweed (@nadiakwd) uses, but I’m not a fan of the OTT symbolism depicting mental health struggles in her large works. It’s less subtle than the romantic poetry I wrote as a teenager, which reads like Keats compared to the overwrought gallery writeup. It’s a shame, because her close cropped self portraits prove just how captivating art can be with a little restraint. Their subtle approach implies emotional turmoil, with just enough expression for you to question your interpretation.

Heavy Bend’ at Gallery 1957 (@gallery1957) until 06 Oct

Images 6-7 = Featuring a ridiculously intricate reverse cut silhouette work from Harry Rüdham (@harryrudham) and a knitted sink by Jiaxi Li (@liuliandaxia) best described as “Do Ho Suh so bling!”, this group show fits a dozen great works into a fish-bowl space too cramped for a Damien Hirst shark, but absolutely worth squeezing into.

2022 Autumn Exhibition’ at Karen Tronel London (@karentronel) until 24 Sep

Images 8-10 = Whether these works by Jofre Hall (@moco_rocketgirl) say anything new about the housing crisis is debatable. But I love how they colourfully straddle the line between clever and kitsch and they’re a hell of a lot of fun to look at... although @rovenko might disagree.

MOCO Rocketgirl’ at Stour Galleries (@stour.galleries) until 02 Oct
