Showcasing artists and works that caught my attention.
〰
Images 1-3 = You can always spot a tourist. None stand out more distinctly than Brazilian street artist Cranio (@CranioArtes) — or, rather, his indigenous blue characters mashed with modern consumerism. This show provides a rare opportunity for Londoners to understand how a street artist from abroad sees the world. I suspect he’ll also be making his mark on a lot of walls before he leaves, including Hackney landmark KTS (@KTSTheCorner).
‘Lost London 2’ at BSMT (@BSMTspace) until 14 Aug
〰
Images 4-5 = Abstract oils by Leah Dyke (@lsdyke.art) form the inaugural show for an outward facing display space that will be giving you a new monthly excuse to explore the art along High Road, Leyton.
‘Soulscape’ at ELMS Window Gallery (@ELMSWindowGallery) until 31 Aug
〰
Images 6-7 = Stour Gallery and Cafe is one of my favourite go-to art hop spots. The latest show, celebrating their 1 year anniversary, reminds me why. Over half the art on display (almost all one-offs) makes me want more, more, more! Like these works by Andrew Kernan (@andrew_kernan_) and Emily Hana (@emily.hana) along with others (not pictured) by Em Argiro (@em_argiro) and Monozygotics (@monozygotic_)
‘Introducing Hoxton’ at Stour Galleries (@stour.galleries) until 04 Sep
〰
Image 8 = I often joke that contemporary art is my religion, so it’s fitting that the latest from Richard Woods (@RichardWoodsStudio) has brought me into the stunning Southwark Cathedral, which I’ve somehow never stepped inside despite it bordering Borough Market. Until now.
‘The Small House’ at Southwark Cathedral (@Southwark_Cathedral) until 31 Aug
〰
Images 9-10 = Soothing swimmers, dimly lit potted palms and sycophantic narration from Ahren Warner (@ahren_warner) triggered PTSD from my years living an isolated, international jet-set corporate lifestyle. Which was immediately shocked away by the brightly lit, in-your-face hedonism on display in the back room. It’s an unsubtle, and possibly unsettling, contrast that might make you wonder what the hell just happened.
‘We Have a Space For Your Every Mood’ at TJBoulting (@TJBoulting) until 13 Aug
PLUS — don’t forget to check What’s On so you don’t miss any of the great shows closing soon.
