2022 - Issue 24

Showcasing artists and works that caught my attention.

Images 1-3 = Eight temporary installations have been added to this year’s compact trail that you can easily see in an afternoon, including time to put up your feet while you enjoy an ice cream with the sculptures in Berkeley (David Breuer-Weil@davidbreuerweil), Grosvenor (Lee Gil Rae@lee_gilrae) and Hanover Squares (Yoshitomo Nara@michinara3).

Mayfair Sculpture Trail’ from Mayfair Art Weekend (@mayfairartweekend) until 31 Jul

It’s somewhat surreal wandering through a contemporary art auction house and seeing estimated sales figures for artists you might only expect to see in museums. Wondering “Who buys this stuff?” is immediately answered by the roar of Aston Martins and Ferraris peacocking their way round nearby Berkeley Square.

Highlights from the ‘20th Century & Contemporary Art Day Sale’ at Phillips (@PhillipsAuction) until 29 Jul

PS — Total range for all 3 works in Image 4 is forecast as £750k - £1M

Images 5-7 = There’s lightness in the double height, salon style hang of heavy handed flowers by Tal R. that offsets the seriousness next door in Gallery II, where Celia Paul, Chantal Joffe and Njideka Akunyili Crosby (@NjidekaAkunyiliCrosby) and others confront you with isolating, and sometimes uncomfortable, imagery.

Untitled Flowers’ and ‘Intimacy’ at Victoria Miro (@VictoriaMiroGallery) until 30 Jul

Image 8 = Just in time for Pride, this show of internationally-based queer artists explores LGBTQ+ themes of love, companionship and tenderness in unapologetic and occasionally explicit art.

Come Out & Play’ at Beers (@BeersLondon) until 16 Jul

Images 9-10 = Regardless what you think of NFTs (do you even know what they are?) the introduction of an actual, physical NFT Gallery signifies they’re moving into the next stage of market maturity. Drop in to learn more about this new technology, and have a bit of fun taking reflective photos of the floor.

Surface Tension’ at The NFT Gallery (@thenftgallerylondon) until 22 Jul

PLUS — don’t forget to check What’s On so you don’t miss any of the great shows closing soon.
