2022 - Issue 17

Showcasing artists and works that caught my attention.

Images 1-3 = Split across 2 spaces, this large group show has no discernible theme other than a majority of the pieces are big and/or figurative. To be honest, it’s a bit of a jumble sale but you’re bound to find something you like. Personally, I thought the standout works (pun intended) were small (Mario Moore (@MarioMooreArt) oil on copper portraits - Image 4) and abstract (Mevlana Lipp (@Mevlana_Lipp) velvet/wood flower - not pictured)

What Now?’ at PM/AM (@pm______am) until 20 May

Images 5-6 = It’s fitting that the first institutional installation for self taught, multi-disciplinary artist KV Duong (@KVDuongArt) is in a museum that highlights stories of immigration. So be sure to read KV’s writeup, which explains how his paintings, sculptures and performance art address his and his family’s experience as Vietnamese migrants.

Too Foreign for Home, Too Foreign for Here’ at Migration Museum (@MigrationMuseum) until 29 May

Images 7-8 = Before you say “my kid could do that” you really ought to see what these works looked like before Tom de Freston (@TomdeFrestonArt) accidentally burnt them to the charred remains on display. The entire saga — covered in a documentary playing in the gallery — is an inspiring story of how to turn tragedy into hope and beauty.

From Darkness’ at No 20 Arts (@No20arts) until 18 Jun

Image 9 + video (below) = 180 The Strand is pretty much the only game in town when it comes to cutting edge A/V art, smoke and laser shows. They do it very, very well — and in a crazy fun labyrinth of an underground bunker that I still can’t find my way round on my own. Alas, if you’ve seen their last two shows then their latest might feel a bit samey-samey, except for the increased price.

Future Shock’ at 180 The Strand (@180.Studios) until 28 Aug

PLUS — don’t forget to check What’s On so you don’t miss any of the great shows closing soon.
